Hub Members Clarissa Reikersdorfer & Ulrike Bronner are presenting on a [Member's Slot] their book “URBAN NOMADS. Building Shanghai: Migrant Workers and the Construction Process” that was the output of their academic studies on architecture.

By presenting a collection of snapshots, of close-ups of the urban transformation they are taking a close look at the interrelated phenomena of international business migrants and rural migrant workers in Shanghai.Through separate case studies of each group’s role in the construction process in this rapidly developing world city, they shed light on the spatial implications of both groups’ migrant status, realizing that they both live in “cocoon worlds”.

Why do Chinese construction workers live on the construction site?
Why are so many architects moving to Shanghai? weishenme?

This is about their circumstances and capabilities, their personal motives and their dreams. Additionally they will present “Lüxing Laoshi”, which represents their small part in intervening in the unsustainable and unjust reality of construction work in Shanghai. • Did you know that the main reason why Vienna has such a famously good coffee is that it draws its water from pristine and well-protected water regions in the pre-Alps?

• Did you know that 1.1 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean drinking water?

• Did you also know that about 50% of the world’s water supplies have been privatised over the last 25 years and are now operated by either one of two giant water corporations? A fact which has consistently lead to a substantial decrease in quality and a dramatic increase in price?

The world of water is as interesting as it is complex. Reason enough for taliaYsebastian and soulbottles, two ventures based at the Hub Vienna, to organise a HUBxWater, taking place at Tuesday, the 21st of February at 6:30 pm at the Hub.

The event will feature three diverse experts on water, each talking in the length and spirit of a TED talk, followed by a Q&A and a facilitated exchange around the topic.

• Andreas Gmeiner, cultural anthropologist, organizer of the “Aqua Anthropos” conference and founder of the “FairWei” Fair Water Label will talk about the “Do’s and Don’ts of water projects in developing countries”.
• Vitus Angermaier from the University of Vienna will enlighten us on “The cultural role of water in classical Ayurveda”, touching the important role of culture in water development projects for the region.
• Stephan Lutter from Vienna’s Sustainable Europe Research Institute will give us insights on “Virtual Water. Or: Whose water are we consuming?”, showing the impact of our everyday consumptions on the water situation in the producing countries. For example: Did it ever cross your mind that spain is actually exporting water – through tomatoes?

- “Tapped”, a film that examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil.

About the Hosts:
taliaYsebastian are two Industrial Designers whose next project is developing a smart solution for clean water supply in rural communities of Nepal. A project which is being supported by grants of the City of Vienna.
soulbottles is a young startup which creates ways that make drinking tap water easier and more fun – in all areas of consumption. They are starting with handsome and stylish glass drinking bottles and are developing disrupting projects for restaurants and beverage machines.

Hello Hubbies,

Made IN – made BY (mimb) is a Social Business that through the conduction of clothing manufacture. It intends to offer fair working conditions to female immigrants facing disadvantages or difficulties in entering the labour market. The unemployment rate is generally higher among non Austrian female citizens. Furthermore, women are more affected by poverty than men. mimb tackles these problems, strives to improve their social and economic situation and tries to encourage immigrant women to find productive self-realization. Through a hybrid strategy, mimb intends to promote the sustainability of its business. On the one hand mimb will produce for designers and companies with social and environmental concerns. On the other hand mimb will establish its own label making use of organic/local resources.

All women involved in the project so far had major importance and influence to the achievement of the activities that we have accomplished so far. In this way, our main success was the establishment of a committed, creative, and generous team. Our key moment was definitely our first meeting at the NGO Lefö on June 2011, where we got to know each other and decided to start together the mimb activities.

At the moment, we are evaluating our activities and planning strategies to improve our future work.
Our main goals for 2012 are to start capital by investing on machines, sewing material and wages (grants, prizes), to involve two more skilled seamstresses, to get our next sewing workshop funded through respekt.net. Moreover we want to produce our own designs, to develop a stronger network and to achieve start-up level.

Studienaktie.org is a project about providing meaningful and profitable investments in education. Our approach is to facilitate education for everyone. Therefore we coach people in developing their individual concept for life, provide financial support for their educational projects by winning private individuals as educational investors and encourage people to go their own individual way, taking ownership of their future. By investing in educational projects the investors get a threefold return: financial, social and personal.

In 2011 we started to look actively for Austrian individuals and institutions to invest in educational projects and to support our activities. We started a pilot project with the University of Arts Graz to give students the opportunity of financial help and mentoring by their lecturers. Furthermore, we initiated first cooperations with companies and regional associations.

As we believe that there is a high demand on financing educational projects in Austria we want to expand our activities to give everyone the chance to develop their personal concept of life and to take the first steps in realizing it.
In preparation of replicating our activities in Austria we want to focus on Vienna, Styria and Vorarlberg/Tirol in 2012.

taliaYsebastian is an industrial design studio focused on human design concepts. We supply companies and organizations with design solutions that focus on human aspects that address economic, ecologic and human sustainability, using design and the creative process to address those issues.  This is our motivation and goal.

Key moments have been characterised in 2011 by good luck and trust. Luck led us to meet and connect with Architecture for Humanity, and it is with them that we will continue to focus on the global and local issue of safe drinking water in the coming year.
Trust in us a young and newly founded design studio by the German baby oral care company NUK has helped us to move forward with giant steps, both as designers as well as a service provider, and together with this our first big B2B client we have designed our first industrial product for better oral health habits. Furthermore, we have offered our services and have conceived solutions in education, drinking water supply and health care.

2012 is our Year of Water with the inevitable effect of contributing to the empowerment of women. Our goal is to establish ourselves as the human design studio in Austria. Safe drinking water is our main topic; our mission is to create a beautiful autarkic device to purify water in highland regions and our resolution for 2012 is to continue turning our optimism into efficient work by contributing to the millennium development goals.

Theatania.at is a project about facilitating people’s access to theater and their decision for a play they would enjoy to watch. Therefore we gather information about the piece, the author, the theater, tickets and reviews on the website. In a next step theatania.at will also allow a Web 2.0 community to share their impressions and theater experiences online.

In 2011 I implemented the first step. I found people who are interested in supporting my idea and who help me to put it in action.

For next year, I am looking forward to get the website online and find a user community. Furthermore I need to find out in which direction our development can be reasonable and worthy.
